History of Capoeira

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that combines elements of self defense, dance, music, rhythm, acrobatics, history and culture. Capoeira is a dialog between players, a converstaion through movement which can take on many shades of meaning.

Capoeira was created in Brazil by Afro-Brazilian slaves during the colonial era. Capoeira arose as a hope of survival for an escaped slave against the capitães-do-mato, the armed and mounted colonial agents who were charged with capturing escapees. The dance was incorporated to avoid detection and corporal punishments. If slaves were caught practicing fighting techniques, they could be punished or executed. With music and rhythmic moves, they raised no suspicion of escape attempts.

Today, the game of capoeira is an incredible workout and teaches the values of discipline.  This martial art is a positive experience and awesome activity for all ages. Players range from three years old to 70 years young.

All of these elements are brought together to help children develop life long skills to promote self confidence and social skills while broadening their horizons in a positive healthy way.

Our Capoeira classes are not just a great physical workout but a true cultural experience passed on.
